Why is PCH closed?

You may have wondered why northbound PCH is closed along the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve?

Recent articles in local newspapers and blogs explaining that the closures were to allow crews to repair eroded ground adjacent to the Bolsa Chica Wetlands.

Crews are trying to install 27-foot-tall metal plates underground to prevent tidal water from wearing down the ground under the highway’s shoulder. High tides in July accelerated the ground erosion just below the asphalt.

The closure impacted northbound lanes from Goldenwest Street.   Southbound lanes are unaffected.

  1. Metal Plates? Salt Water? Does not compute! Doesn’t metal (even stainless steel) eventually rust when exposed to salt water? Good effort, but yet another boondoggle…

  2. Today is August 16 and PCH was one lane in this area. When is this project going to be completed?
